Neighbors were: Lily Ann & Hampton Arrington Joseph & Nancy Staples Joseph & Nelly Ann Markham John & Sarah Worley Martha & James Spencer(?) Granville Tucker & Lewis & Rachel Leighton A.J. & Ann E Bozart(?) It is most unclear why this family is listed in Botetourt Co as the family farm they lived on was much of Skillern Mountain left to Timanda Jane by her Father Spotswood Braford and was in Rockbridge Co. 1860 Census VA, Williamsburg, James City p661 is most probably Thomas H Moore at No 61 Thos Moore 23 M Farmer (Appr) born Campbell Co VA Thomas H. Moore Regiment Name 11 Virginia Infantry Confederate Company E Soldier's Rank_In Private Soldier's Rank_Out Private Film Number M382 roll 39. Marcellus Braford, Pilander Braford and J.M Braford were in the same unit. There was also a Thomas H Moore in the 4th Regiment US Volunteer Infantry, Union. It is far more likely Thomas is the one in the Confederate Infantry. CONFEDERATE VIRGINIA TROOPS 11th Regiment, Virginia Infantry 11th Infantry Regiment was organized at Lynchburg, Virginia, in May, 1861, and accepted into Confederate service in July. Its members were raised in the counties of Campbell, Botetourt, Montgomery, Fauquier, Culpeper, and Rockbridge. The unit fought at First Manassas under General Longstreet and at Dranesville under J.E.B. Stuart. Later it was assigned to General A.P. Hill's, Kemper's, and W.R. Terry's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. It served with the army from Williamsburg to Gettysburg except when it was at Suffolk with Longstreet. The 11th was engaged at Plymouth in North Carolina and after returning to Virginia saw action at Drewry's Bluff and Cold Harbor. It went on to fight in the Petersburg trenches south and north of the James River and ended the war at Appomattox. This regiment reported 6 killed and 15 wounded at Dranesville, totalled 750 men in April, 1862, and lost 134 at Williamsburg and 100 at Frayser's Farm. It sustained 63 casualties at Second Manassas, had about forty percent disabled of the 359 engaged at Gettysburg, and lost 15 killed and 94 wounded at Drewry's Bluff. Many were captured at Sayler's Creek, and only 1 officer and 28 men surrendered. The field officers were Colonels David Funsten, Samuel Garland, Jr., Maurice S. Langhorne, and Kirkwood Otey; and Majors Adam Clement, Carter H. Harrison, and J.R. Hutter. Vol I p 2,5,11,12,19,21,25,27,29,33,36,42,46,51 Vol II p3 Vol IV p1,3 According to Family Legend of the descendants of son Edgar Marcellus Moore, Thomas deserted the family at some time and became a hobo. He simply rode his horse to a nearby town, tied his horse up to a tree near the river and climbed on a train. He supposedly went first to Niagara Falls, got sick, went on to Cincinnati and died. Edgar Marcellus Moore went to Cincinnati once looking for him. Much looking in local death records in the Cincinnati area by Ed Clayton has failed to uncover any record, but even if true, it is unlikely that local officials would have known his name. Oral history from a Mr Boid Wilcher or Rockbridge says Thomas H & Amanda Jane had 3 more children named James, David & Spotswood in addition to Mary "Emily", Edgar Marcellus and Jane had Lula with James Fitch. He did not even mention Charles B. Clearly there were only 4 children alive in 1916 when the Family Lawsuit over sale of the Farm was filed between Mary Emma and Charles vs Edgar and Lula. This other information is very questionable, but possible, and is included less it be lost forever.
