Note: General John Gordon of the Confederate Army was a "cousin" of Nancy Graham. On his death he was laid in State at the Georgia Capital in Atlanta. It was the only time Nancy Graham ever visited her daughter there "to attend the funeral of her Cousin". Ed has run this into the ground trying to find this link within John B Gordon's widely published Family Tree with no luck! Chick says she was a 4th cousin of John B. Gordon (from Katie). The Mystery of Gordon vs Goode Malinda ?/Gordon/Goode of early 1800's of Lincon/Boyle/Mercer KY I am doing a repost and update of a request first made by Lee Goode in 2000 to the Gordon Board. Here is what he said then: Malinda Gordon, maiden name unknown, born Va. 1798, Known children born in Ky: Ambrose b. 1812, Stage b. 1820 and William b. 1822-23. 1837 in Mercer County, Ky.(now Boyle) Malinda signed for Stage (17yrs.) to marry. Her signature is as mother, Malinda Goode of Lincoln County, Ky. No record of a Malinda Gordon marriage to a Goode can be located. 1860 census show Malinda and Micajah Goode, Boyle County, Ky. Beginning in 1837 and continuing until 1856 Stage Gordon began switching between Goode and Gordon as a last name. Ambrose used the name Gordon for the last time in 1849. All children born to Ambrose and Stage use the name Goode. Looking for any information that would identify "Mr. Gordon", father of Ambrose and Stage and the Gordon line from which he came. Any information or guesses would be helpful. He got no answers. There is a string of children attributed to Micajah Goode and either Delilah Mercer or Malinda "Gordon" including: Camden Goode, birth abt 1813, married Mary Crim 1/19/1835. Benjamin Goode birth abt 1814, married Eliza ??? Delilah Goode, born 1820 in Casey Co. KY. Married Smith B. Noel 12/24/1836 in Lincoln Co KY. William Gibson Goode born 1821, died 5/23/1896 in Boyle County, KY. married Sarah "Sallie" Johnson Shearin 8/5/1862. Joseph H. Goode, born abt 1822 (1850 Census says 1825) married Martha Rains. John Goode, birth 3/6/1822, died 3/2/1894 in Christian County, IL, married Mary J.???. Daniel B. Goode, birth 4/6/1829 died 12/25/1898 in Boyle County, Ky, married Anna Liza Wall on 7/11/1853 Casey Co. Possible second marriage to Margaret A. "Maggie" Gibonay. Elizabeth Camden Goode, born 2/11/1830, died 4/16/1899 in Amo, Hendricks County, IN. Married Joseph Temple 10/27/1851 in Boyle Co., Kentucky. The researcher from this line believes strongly she is daughter of Micajah and Malinda. She is named for Micajah's Mother. Nancy Goode, born Jan 1833, married John R. Graham 10/3/1851. I strongly believe Nancy was the daughter of a currently Unknown Gordon and Malinda. (Later proven not true.) Nancy's lineage talked of her as a Gordon and her Grandchildren thought that was her maiden name. The only time she visited her daughter in Atlanta was to come to the Funeral of her "Cousin" General Governor Senator John B. Gordon when he was Laid in State at the GA State Capitol in 1904. One of Nancy's Granddaughters told other relatives that Nancy was John B. Gordon's 4th cousin. In the 1900 Census while living with daughter and Son-in-Law she is listed as both her father and Mother were born in VA. Samuel Goode. Born about 1835 (Possibility he was the one married to Julia Ann Waters on 10 Jun 1875 in Boyle Co.) Ambrose Gordon/Goode was born about 1814 and married Emerine Christenson 1/21/1839 in Mercer Co. KY. Stage Gordon/Goode was born about 1820 and married Hester Ann "Hetty" Clemmons 9/20/1837 in Mercer Co. KY when Stage was 17 years. The only children we can be certain were those of Malinda as a Gordin were Stage and Ambrose because those were the names used in marriage Records. The other Goode's through Delilah listed above are most probably the product of Micajah Goode/Delilah Mercer. Those born later are believed to be of the Micajah Goode/Malinda Gordon and/or Malinda and an unknown Mr. Gordon. Two of the researchers have different family Legends where one talked of Gordon Ancestors and the other of Goode Ancestors. There is a large gap in ages between John b.1822 and Daniel B. b.1829. However we do not have certain dates on some and the Census age's conflict with other information for some. A group of 5 researchers have discovered that four of these children are our ancestors and do not know if they really were Gordon's or Goode's (except Lee's was definitely a Gordon). The ones who are Gordon we do not know who their father might be. Why on earth would grown, married adult males change their name from that of their father to their step-father? Lee found the Gordon's were from a place called "White Oak". We believe it is White Oak Creek in Boyle and Lincoln Co's. She was in Whitley Co KY in 1798 because she had a indenture to sell property there in 1898.
