Lonnie Ellis divorced Louise and remarried in 1931. He was an absentee father to the daughters of his first marriage. He never supported the family financially. Even as the girls reached adulthood, Lonnie never chose to be involved in their lives, or the lives of his grandchildren from this first marriage on any significant level.
He had two children a boy and a girl with his second wife Fay. He died in Richmond, Virginia of a heart attack in 1969. He was 68.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Virginia Fay Ellis, one son, Dwight Drew Ellis of Roanoke Rapids, NC; three daughters, Mrs. Earlean Hutchinson, Mrs. Virginia Gunn, both of Richmond; Mrs. Donna D. Pollard of Orange Park, Florida; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Jean S. Stuart of Richmond; one brother; two sisters; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren; Bliley Funeral Home 3rd and Marshall Interment in Oakwood. He is not buried with his first wife Louise Spicer.
