Notes
a. Note:   Minnie Celeste Carr was born and raised in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. Her father William Scott Corr did not move to Richmond until Minnie had married Benjamin Patrick Spicer. She was educated through elementary school and was literate. She was an excellent seamstress and cook, and passed her knowledge to her two girls.
She married Benjamin Patrick Spicer of Hanover County, Virginia on Dec 25, 1896 and moved to Beaverdam, where they raised their children.
Minnie's husband, Benjamin Patrick Spicer was a farmer with excellent carpentry talents, he made much of their furniture. Minnie Celeste raised her family and ran a boarding house. Among the boarders were Mr. Paul, Bob Ellis, Annie Loving, and many others. Most of Minnie's boarders were life long friends of her family. The Great Depression forced Minnie and Ben to move to Richmond, Virginia. Ben farmed for the State of Virginia and Minnie ran a boarding house. Their farm was located off Brittles Lane, between Nine Mile Road and Williamsburg Road in Richmond, Virginia.
Ben and Minnie were in the 1900 and 1920 Census of Beaverdam, Hanover County, Virginia. Spicers lived in Beaverdam since colonial days. Most of Ben's family lived nearby. (copy of census 1900-1910 on file)
By 1930 Ben and Minnie were living on Venerable Street in Richmond, and were members of the Venerable Street Baptist Church. Their daughter Louise married Lonnie A. Ellis in 1920 at the age of 15. Lonnie worked for the Railroad and was sent to Clifton Forge Virginia, working from that depot. Their marriage was short lived and by 1930 Louise Ellis and Lonnie were divorced and she and her two daughters, Earlean and Margaret Virginia, my mother, were living with Ben and Minnie. My mother spent most of her early years in their home. On Sunday February 24, 1935 an article appeared in the Richmond Times Dispatch:
Mrs. B. P. Spicer entertained "The Balck Cat Club" at her home Friday night with a valentine party. The guest were Misses Jane Hare, Earline Ellis, Helen Gunn, Lois Gunn, Francis Spicer, Eloise Spicer, Margaret Spicer, Virginia Ellis, Gloria Garagr, Virginia Vaughan, Annie Loviing, Messrs. Starkey Hare, Ray Baughan, Earl Gathright, William Kline, John Rhea, Marshall Shurm, B. P. Spicer, Allen Martin, Lonnie Ellis, Mesdames Mamie Hare, and Louise Ellis. Sunday, February 24, 1935 Paper: Richmond Times Dispatch (Richmond, VA) Page: 33
After Ben's death in 1943, Minnie moved into the home of Louise and her second husband Albert Wicker. For many years they lived on Fourth Avenue in Highland Park. About 1967 Minnie moved next door to her daughter Louise on Fourth Avenue and took up housekeeping for her son Clarence Spicer, who was in his seventies. Clarence had numerous ailments, most resulting from gun shot wounds he received while an officer on the Vice Squad for the City of Richmond Police dept. Minnie died on June 18, 1968 from complications on a broken hip, after a fall. She is buried in Oakwood Cemetery on Nine Mile Road in Richmond, Va., beside her husband Benjamin Patrick Spicer, in the plot where her daughter Louise Spicer Ellis Wicker, and granddaughter (my mother) Margaret Virginia Ellis Gunn Hogge are also buried.
