a. Note:   Ralph Lorenzo Lewis was the oldest of five children, born to Alexander Silkirk and Cornelia Abernathy Lewis. His name, given at the census in 1880 by his parents, was Rathbone. This is the only reference that this may have been his birth name. At his marriage, he gave his given name as Ralph Lorenzo Lewis. He had two brothers and two sister.
 He married Katie Bell Gunn December 22, 1897, at the age of 21. Together they raised 10 children. He was a farmer in Alberta, Virginia. They lived a simple but hard life of a farming family. Ralph had fair skin and balding hair.
 At the time of the 1910 Census the family was living in the Sturgeon Magisterial District of Brunswick County, Va. Ralph and Katie stated they had been married 12 years. His occupation was listed as General Farm Employee both could read and write. At the time of the census, Katie had given birth to five children, 4 were living. Ralph's age was 33, Katie Bell 30, Mirtie B. [Myrtle Belle] daughter age 11, Mary C. [Mary Carter] age 10, Viola daughter age 5, and Ralph L. son age 1yr 3 months were living in the household. These are consistent with known birth dates for the family.

  Ralph was tall, thin and always had a ready smile. He and Katie Bell were married for 66 years. He died at age 87, after a short illness and is buried beside his wife, in the church cemetery of Bethel Methodist Church in Alberta, Brunswick County, Va.

 Alberta - Ralph L. Lewis, 87, died Thursday. Funeral 2 p.m. Sunday. Thomas Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, burial Alberta Cemetery. Survivors include two daughters, Myrlte Brooks of Highland Springs, and Mrs. L. M. Gunn of Richmond, and a son, E. W. Lewis of Richmond.
