At the time of the 1920 Census, Lafayette, age 24 and Mary C. age 19 were living in Richmond, Virginia at 1716 North 20th Street. Only Myrtle Francis had been born, and they listed her age as 1 10/12ths. Vol 66 Edition 125 Sheet 4, Line 75. Lafayette was an automobile mechanic. His sister Edith and her husband "Bill" Snead were neighbors.
1930, Jefferson Ward, Richmond City, Virginia. Lafayette Monroe and Mary Carter Gunn were 34 and 30 respectively. According to the census they married when Lafayette was 21 and Mary 17. He was a good businessman, and owned much property on 25th Street and on Nine Mile Road.
Three months, after the marriage of his youngest child, Mildred, in 1954, Fayette died of a heart attack. He was a tall man, with brown hair, and blue eyes. He was a heavy smoker, which was likely why he died at age 55. He was intelligent, honest, respected, and well liked by all who knew him. He was devoted to his family and friends, and ready to help wherever he saw a need. Most often anonymously. He was a lifelong member of Fairmount Methodist where he served as deacon. He had a quick wit, a great sense of humor, and a ready smile. Most of all, had the ability to bring out the best in other people.[
