Anna Louise Spicer was the youngest child of Benjamin and Minnie Corr Spicer. She was born in Beaverdam, Hanover County, Virginia on August 1, 1904. Beaverdam is still, in 2005, a small farming community about 30 miles north of Richmond, Virginia. Anna was most commonly known as Louise, and her closest family and friends called her Lou.
She never had kind things to say about growning up in Beaverdam. This perhaps explains why she married Lonnie Albert Ellis on June 26, 1920 at the tender age of 15. She turned 16 two months later. The couple moved to Richmond. 15 months after their marriage, Louise gave birth on Sept 5, 1921 to Earlean Celeste Ellis, the first of two daughters. Earlean's middle name was also the middle name of Louise's mother, Minnie Celeste Corr Spicer. 17 months after Earlean was born, their second child, my mother, Margaret Virginia Ellis was born on April 21, 1923.
Louise's marriage to Lonnie Ellis was short lived. He worked for the Railroad and was sent to Clifton Forge Virginia to work at the depot there. Lonnie was an unfaithful husband, and they divorced, leaving Louise to raised her two girls without his financial support.
With few options, Louise and her daughters moved into her parents home. Ben and Minnie were loving people, and the memories of their granddaughters of living with them were tender. In the 1930 census, Louise, her daughters Earlean and Virginia were living on 22nd Street with her parents Ben and Minnie Corr Spicer. Louise and the girls moved during their high school years closer to the city where they could walk to school, but they were never far from their grandparent's Ma and Pa Spicer.
Louise remained single until her daughters had moved away from home, and married. In 1941 she married Albert Wicker. Albert worked for the Post Office, and later for the Yellow Cab Company. Albert and Louise had no children.
She raised her granddaughter Diane Celeste Christian, the daughter of Earlean Ellis. Louise, Albert and Diane lived on 4th Avenue in the Highland Park section of Richmond. Louise's mother, Minnie Corr Spicer lived with her. Louise worked for Freidman Marks Clothing, a men's clothing manufacturer, as a seamstress for many years and retired from there. After her retirement Louise and Albert moved from Highland Park and purchased a home on Lanvale Avenue in Richmond. Louise was still living on Lanvale when she passed away.
Albert Wicker preceded his wife in death. He died of a heart attack while driving his cab. Louise died in 1983, having contracted hepatitis A, from tainted blood received during surgery. She outlived both her daughters Virginia and Earlean. She died without a Will, and her estate went to her next of kin, her two granddaughters, Cheryl Gunn and Diane Christian. Diane was executor.
She is buried in Oakwood Cemetery on Nine Mile Road in Richmond, Virginia. Family Bible records Birth, Marraiges and Death for the line.
