a. Note:   Maria's husband, W. R. Chew, was a stock broker. They lived in Manchester. They probaby raised the 2 youngest children of her brother, Henry James, and his wife Catherine (Pamplin) after Catherine's death in September 1884. Elizabeth Jane [Bessie] was 4 years old, and Alfred Ernest [Jack) was 2. They adopted Jack. Bessie later traveled with her uncle Chew, and inherited when he died before 1908.
