a. Note:   Mahala was born in the part of Knox Co. that became Harlan Co. in 1819. In 1880 at age 69 she is living with her daughter Leanner and her family. Leanner married a distant Napier cousin. Mahala is called Mahaly in 1870 and 1880. It was common in KY to say many of the names with the long "e" sound at the end. The 1880 census is the only census which records that Mahala could not read and write.
