Notes
a. Note:   Cary Alley is first found in the Revolutionary enlistment records.
 DANIEL TRIGG'S MILITIA 31 Mar 1781
 New River, Montgomery Co, Virginia
Source: Fincastle & Montgomery Co VA Rev. War Records
  Cary Alley under 18
Thomas Alley (could be his father or brother) and many of his neighbors are listed. Also listed are two brothers of Susannah Howerton: John Howerton and William Howerton
I have assumed that Cary was at least 15 when he joined. This would make his birth date between 31 Mar 1763 and Mar 1766. (about 1764 if he was 17)
There is a record of Cary Alley in a business deal with Thomas Alley, Sr. and William Howerton as partners in 1792. They are owed money in a document in 1794.
Even though the first records locating Cary Alley is in the neighboring Wythe and Grayson Counties, the fact that the minister that married him is the nearby neighbor of Thomas Alley, Sr. is good evidence that Cary is a child of Thomas Sr. Since he is not listed as an orphan along with Isham and Joseph he is not the brother of Thomas, Sr. He is not a son of Nicholas Allee, as I have found him listed, without proof of the relationship. The strongest evidence that he is not the son of Nicholas is that he is not in his will which lists all the children by both wives.
In 1800 Cary is listed in the Personal Property Tax List of Wythe Co. In 1805 and 1810 He is listed in the Personal Property Tax List of Grayson Co. The Grayson Co. 1810 census was burned in the War of 1812. Between 1810 and 1827 he is not recorded anywhere. Although, in 1817 and 1824 there is a Care Allen in the tax list which is probably him. During this time he was in Montgomery Co. at the estate sale of Thomas Alley, Sr. 18th May, 1827. He would have been about 63 at that time. It should be noted that the Grayson Co. and Wythe Co. lines at this time are only about 10 miles from where the other Alley's lived in Montgomery Co.
The 1830 Montgomery Co. census, the only census Cary is listed in, has 1 male 30 to 40 and one female 20 to 30 in addition to the parents. His daughter Susannah was married before that.
Samuel is first listed in the 1813 Tax records when he was about 18 years old. Samuel seems to have been left out of the family line by other researchers because so little is known of him in the records of the Montgomery and Grayson County area of Virginia. Not many people seem to have researched his line. Samuel left his Grayson Co. home land between the 1825 and 1826 recording of the property tax listings in Grayson Co. to go to Logan Co., now West Virginia, where he appears in the 1830 census.
The Alley lands in Montgomery Co. were close together, especially Cary and Thomas, Jr. It may be that they were in the same residence in 1820. There are extra children listed that are not children of Thomas, Jr. making this possible. Although Cary and his wife are not accounted for.
The identity of Cary's children, except for Susannah, is not proven. The choice is based mainly on Grayson Co. Personal Property Tax Records and the fact that the only other available parent in the area is Thomas Alley, Jr., and the identity of his children is well established. The two daughters Ann and Elizabeth did not marry and associated with the other Alley's in Montgomery Co. See Samuel for a discussion of him and Caleb.
Richard Whitt is a Baptist Minister. In 1785 he was certified to perform marriages.
 Will of Rev. Richard Whitt:
"He gives all the tract of land he now lives on to his son Archibald, this tract to him and his heirs forever. This tract to him to be understood to contain the whole of the land he bought from John Harrison on Meadow creek...to include the parcel which I have allocated for my son Richard Whit at the upper end of said tract." Signed 25 Apr 1807 and probated in the January Court, Montgomery County Va 1813.

Archibald is the father of James who married Cary's daughter Susannah.
