Note: The family is in the 1860 Owsley Co. census. The census taker uniquely formatted the names. Husband was against the left margin, as was his wife without the last name. All the children were indented. Others were listed afterwards on the left margin with last names even if it matches the family name. This strongly indicates this listing is a family. He is living with the family of his daughter Nancy, her husband James Allen and their family. There is a John Roberts in Bourbon Co. KY in the tax list March 1791. Our John is too young to be him. There is a John Roberts listed in the 1810 Wayne Co., KY census. John Robards (Roberts) also listed as leaving Wayne Co. and going to TN in the 1815 Wayne Co. Tax list. Earlier TN was part of NC. John's birth place in one census record is reported as TN, which may mean that he at least lived there. Wiley, the name of John's son, is a common name among the Roberts families in NC. The 1810 Wayne Co. census has John with a wife and young children. For this to be our John the younger children and his wife have to have died. William, thought to be John's brother, lived many years in Wayne Co. In the 1820 Clay Co., KY census John and family are living next to his mother-in-law Nancy Campbell. John and family fit the census records in 1830 Perry Co., KY. (Perry County was formed in 1821 from Clay and Floyd Counties. Breathitt County was formed in 1839 from Clay, Estill & Perry Counties.) He could not be found in 1840 and 1850. He may be listed as James in 1840 without any children. "The 1850 Perry County Census is an incomplete census as the enumerators did not visit everyone in the county missing many people that should otherwise be listed in the census. At that time there were no signs saying you are now entering Breathitt County so the Enumerators did not always observe County lines.... Often times the enumerator did not walk up a hollow but instead asked the families that lived nearby the names and ages of those that lived in the hollow above them...." (http://members.iglou.com/ab4rx/1850.txt) Martha is listed in 1870 with Susanna Roberts. Allen is listed only in 1860 with his father, John (listed as born in TN). In 1870 Breathitt Co., KY, John is listed as 100 years old, born in VA and living with his son John. There is evidence that the Campbell, Smith, Roberts, Combs and Ponder families all spent time in the border area of North Carolina and Tennessee. Birth Place of father, John & mother, Susannah as reported by children in 1880 & 1900: Child father born mother born Nancy KY KY (1900 KY KY) Martha VA VA (1900 KY KY) John C. NC KY (1900 VA KY) Wiley NC KY (1900 SC KY) Caleb VA KY (1900 VA KY) Ava VA VA (1900 VA KY) John himself or his son reported John's birth place as: 1860 TN (living with son Allen) 1870 VA (living with son John) Nancy's death certificate lists John Robert's birth place as VA. Informant is G. F. Allen, Nancy's son. John appears to have lived in all of these states. Note that two Roberts siblings married Noble siblings.
