Notes
a. Note:   I have assumed that she is the Polly Ally listed in the 1850 Census Mortality Schedule for Wythe Co. VA, Age: 80. Death: April 1850. State of Birth: VA. Her son Adam and family lived in Wythe Co.
Mary Short could be the child of several Shorts in the area. Two years before her marriage the 1793 Personal Property Tax List of Wythe Co. VA lists several Shorts.
  Name Tithes Blacks Blacks Horses
12-16 16+ First Section Present day Wythe, Smyth and part of Pulaski Counties
 Short, David 1
 Short, William 1 1
Second Section - What became Grayson County in 1793
Alley, John 1 3 This may be the son of Nicholas Allee.
 Short, William 1 1
 Short, David, Sen. 1 1
 Short, David, Junr. 1
Third Section - Area north of Walker's Mountain: no Shorts
David Short.was in the Montgomery/Wythe/Grayson area as early as 1771, at least that is the earliest land record I can find. Mary and Cary witnessed a deed for David Short in 1798 for land on the East Fork of Poplar Camp Creek, later known as Shorts Creek. The town Poplar Camp and Shorts Creek are in Carroll Co. Carroll was the part of Wythe Co. that become Grayson in 1793 and Carroll in 1843. Thus David Sr. & Jr.and William of the second section of the tax list are in the area of Shorts Creek, and not David and Wm. of the first section. William and his wife (I think Rachel) lived into his 80s, last appearing in the 1840 census (born in 1750s). From the little we know, it seems that Wm & David Sr. would be near the same age.
