Note: Thomas Henry weighed 2 1/2 lbs. at birth, and his mother only carried him for 5 months. His son, "Thomas Austin Funderburk, Jr. weighed 12 lbs. Born at 12:12 A.M. July 15, 1923 at Grandfather's Home 1130 - 20th St. Columbus, Georgia. Delivered by Dr. F. L. Cosby. Same Dr. Delivered T. H. Funderburk, his first delivery (the 2 1/2 lb. baby). Grandmother Martha Elizabeth was First Patient, as a Medical Doctor. Formerly a Veterinarian. Family Doctor had left for office 23 miles away 2 hours previous. Doctor Cosby was called in Emergency as regular Dr. could not be caught or contacted with Horse & Buggy Days. Dr. Cosby then turned to practice Medicine." (Thomas Henry Funderburk in "Funderburk Ancestry Paper") His mother died 5 days after his birth. The family remembers that Thomas Henry was not expected to live and spent his first months in a shoe box kept near to the stove. His daughters remember he was cared for by the cousin of his step mother, Arrena Batchelor Champion Taft, the same name they remember that Thomas wanted to call his first daughter. Thomas Henry was a machinist in the Navy and later did factory work. He married Margaret Josephine Eagan in 1920. They met at the Boston waterfront where Margaret and her sister Betty would sometimes hang out. He did not work regularly to support his wife and 6 living children. This resulted in him loosing his house and being divorced by Margaret. Thomas took his son Henry and left the family for California. Thomas died of a heart attack on a bus between California and Oregon in 1954. He must have been in Oregon since he is not listed in the California death index. The above information was remembered by his 4 daughters and is recorded in the "Funderburk Ancestry Paper".
