Notes
a. Note:   Birth Certificate: 10 May 1869, mother: Alice Counier, father: Bernard Egan. Born in Aldershot, England.
The family in America thought William's family moved to England when William was 3 years old from County Cork, Ireland. However, the 1871 English census lists Alice's and his birth in Aldershot, Hampshire, England. Looking at various papers of William Egan shows that he wanted people here in America to think he was born in Ireland. On the 25th of April 1894 his British Army Reserve transfer papers correctly gives his birth as Aldershot, England. But his 1899 Federal Naturalization Records in Massachusetts lists his birth in Queens Co., Ireland. It is obvious that he knew where he was born and wanted to claim his parent's homeland as his own. All records in the United States give Ireland as his birthplace.
William was stationed in Nova Scotia, in the English Army, when he met Josephine at church. After his tour of duty he returned to Nova Scotia and discovered that Josephine had moved to Boston in 1890. He came to Boston in 1892, found her, and they were married there. (The 1900 census list his immigration as 1892, and 1920 as 1893.)
  Federal Naturalization Records, MA:
Egan, William. 11 Jackson Pl., Boston. Born: 10 May 1869 Queens Co., Ireland. Naturalization: 13 October 1899 at U.S.C.C. Boston, MA. Certificate: 359-58
It appears that William took his father's name for his middle name after he came to the United States.
William, Josephine, Fredrick and James could not be found in the 1930 census.
Information on the descendants of William and Josephine which does not have a source reference is from family members with some help from "www.peoplefinders.com".
