  Rev. Jeremiah H. Hicks who is now serving as a pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church of Delavan, was born in Wade, Washington Co. Ohio March 29, 1855 and is a son of John and Sarah (Chapman) Hicks, who were also natives of the Buckeye State. In the family where four children, but the three daughters died in infancy, leaving our subject the only survivor.
 His father served as a steamboat captain on the Ohio River until the breaking out of the war of the rebellion, when he enlisted in his country's service as a member of Company I, Second Virginia Cavalry. He served for nearly four years, and died in the service Mar.10, 1864, when 33 years of age. His wife still survives him and is now living in Harrisville Va. She has since married Vivian Chapman, a wholesale grocer of that place.
 The paternal grandfather of our subject Jeremiah Hicks, was born in Ohio, and was numbered among the pioneers of Washington Co. Ohio. He was one of the first steamboat captains that ran on the Ohio River. His death occurred at his old home in 1893 aged 82 yrs. His sons were John, James Wesley all lost their lives in the struggle to preserve the union.
 The maternal grandfather, John Chapman was a native of Pennsylvania, followed farming as a means of livelihood, and was a soldier in the Mexican war. Soon after his return to private life his death occurred.
 The gentleman whose name heads this record was reared in the state of his nativity and acquired his early education in the public schools of Washington Co. He then attended Belpre College, and completed theological course in the spring of 1884. He came to Illinois the same spring and immediately entered upon the work of the ministry and has been preaching regularly since. His first charge was in Mt. Carroll, Ill. where he served 5 yrs. His next was Orangeville where he served 3 yrs. In 1885 he joined the Rock River Conference of ILL. with which he was connected for 10 years. On the expiration of that period he accepted his present charge, and has since been pastor of the church in Delavan, WIS
 On the 24th of July, 1879, Mr. Hicks was united in marriage with Miss Susan Bond, daughter of Franklin and Eliza (Russell) Bond, both of whom were natives of Pennsylvania. Five children have come to bless their union : Gertrude, Vivian, Neva Pearl and Carroll Chandler. ÙCiÙD(The Bonds were from Baltimore and the Russell family could have originally been from PA although the only records available put them in West Virginia in the 1810 census.)
 ÙC/iÙDSocially, Mr. Hicks is connected with the Modern Woodmen fraternity and in politics is a Republican.
 The greater part of his time is devoted to the work of the ministry in which he has been faithful and true laboring earnest for the advancement of the cause of Christianity on Earth. He has the love and respect of his people in Delavan and made many friends during his pastorate.

  After Jeremiah's father died in the Civil War, He and his mother moved back to West Virginia, where he married Susan Bond.
