Note: Alicia Nancy Combs also came from Shenandorah Co. Nancy is living with Patsey in Perry Co. in 1850 and appears to be living with Caleb in Breathitt Co. in 1840. Although both spellings are still used today, "Shirley" is the more common spelling of her name found in the Shirley Cemetery, New Market, Shenandoah Co. and other County records. The earliest births in the cemetery are a generation later than Nancy: Zachariah ShirleyÙCiÙD (Jr.),ÙC/iÙD Born: 11 Oct 1796, Died: 2 Mar 1875 BarbaraÙCiÙD (Keagy) ÙC/iÙDShirley, Born: 11 Oct 1804, Died: 23 Feb 1839, Wife of Zachariah Shenandoah County, Virginia Minute Book 8 March 1814: Zachariah Shirley ÙCiÙD(Jr.)ÙC/iÙD, a base born child of Elizabeth Kagy, is bound by Overseer of Poor to James Evans. He is 17 yrs old Oct. last. Zachariah Sherely, Sr. is the sister of Nancy born 27 March 1759 d. 19 July 1820. She married James Yowell May 23, 1779 in Culpeper Co. VA. Zachariah, Jr. is the only member of the family to go to Shenadoah Co. but several came to KY. She is not Nancy Couch as many have erroniously identified her. Shirley is an old colonial name. Some from German orgins and others of English orgins. It is possible that Nancy is of Welsh ancestry and born in this country.

Note: There is no solid proof that our John Zachariah Campbell is the same John Campbell that married Nancy Sherley. However, all the known facts fit. I have seen one another genealogy that claims this couple in a family in Frederick Co. (W)VA, that also seems creditable, but not certain. There are atleast 2 different Shirley families in the area. The best evidence in our favor is the testimony of John's granddaughter, Phoebe Campbell Noble as recorded by Rev. John J. Dickey: "My father was Lewis Campbell. His father was John Campbell. He came to Breathitt County from Shenandoah Valley soon after the Nobles came to this country." (See notes for John Zachariah Campbell.) A Zachariah Campbell received a land grant in 1779 in Shenandoah Co. In favor of John Campbell of Fredrick Co.: Nancy Shirley daughter of Walter Shirley, Jr. did marry a John Campbell. He owned land in Shenandoah Co. which he inrerited from his father. However, why would the wedding have occured over 50 miles from the home of this Nancy Shirley?
