Notes
a. Note:   These records document Samuel as he moved from VA to Logan Co. now in WV to KY. The 1810 Grayson Co. census is lost.
At a Superior Court begun and held for Grayson County on Monday the 13th day of May 1816.
Indictment to Samuel Ally for an assault.
1820 Grayson Co., VA census: SamÙCsupÙDlÙC/supÙD Alley and female age 26-45 with 4 boys and 1 girl all under 10.
The children would be: William, Casey, Jacob, John and Rebecca.
In February 1822 Samuel Alley bought 100 acres near New River on the south side of the river from Solomon Brown for $25. On 13 May 1822 Samuel Alley sold this land to Ezra Nuckolls for $50.40. (Grayson Co. Deed Book 4 pages 288 & 352)
Last record in South East VA is the 1825 Grayson County, Virginia Personal Property Tax List
Alley, Samuel 1 White Tithe, 0 Black Tithes, 0 Slaves, 0 Horses, 0 Tax
The next available tax list is 1828 in which only his brother Isom is listed. Caleb Alley is named nowhere except in the 1824 Tax List. It appears that they both left Grayson Co. between 1825 and 1828. In the 1810 census Samuel (age 15) could be the older male age 10 to 16 living in the Thomas Alley, Sr. household to help his Uncle Thomas age about 70.
In 1830 Samuel is in the Logan Co. (West)VA census.
All of his children match the ages in the 1830 census.
William's daughter, Louisa Mahala is born in 1835 in VA (must be Logan Co.)
Thus Samuel and his family moved to KY in 1835 or 1836.
Lawrence Co. Kentucky Tax Records for Alley are:
  DATE NAMES
  1832 no Alley listed
 1833 no Alley listed
 1834-36 no list
 1837 Samuel, Wm, Casey
 1838 William, Samuel, Syrus, James
 1839 no list
(The school age children of William exactly match ages of children in the census.)
No. of CHILDREN (in center column) age range (7-17) 1840-42 0 William
1843 William listed in Greenup Co.
 (5-16) 1844 3 Sam'l
 3 William 1845 - William
 1846-48 3 William
1849 1 William (1 child is an obvious error)
 1850 4 William
 1851 5 William
 1852 5 William
 1853 no Alley listed
In 1840 we again find Samuel in (West) VA in the Cabell Co., VA census. (across the river from this corner of KY) His son James is in the Greenup Co. KY census and the location of the other 2 oldest sons Casey and William is not known. Since they were not married they were probably living where they worked. Wm Alley may be with Wm McClure in Lawrence Co. next to the Chapman farm.
In 1844 he is back in Lawrence Co. KY with his 3 school age children (5-16). This is the last listing anywhere for Samuel (Sr.). In 1846 Samuel (Jr. age 20 or 21) is listed in Greenup Co. KY. Also in 1846 Mary (Samuel's wife is listed in Greenup Co. This indicates that Samuel is no longer in the household. There is never a listing of 2 Samuel's, thus it is safe to assume Sr. died. His early death is supported by the family tradition that a sick brother, of two Alley brothers, stayed in KY while the other went on to Missouri. The name of neither brother was known by the family. William's son Hiram was in Missouri for a while and then returned home. But the family story says they never heard from the brother that went to Missouri. Caleb Alley fits the story as the other brother. Caleb is not a common name and a search of all state censuses, especially Missouri, does not find him.
Syrus in the 1834 Lawrence Co. Tax List is a mystery. Is he Casey? Is he Caleb who went to Missouri?
