Notes
a. Note:   Various enlistment information:
Confederacy Enlistment Date: 1 Apr 1863 at Wolfe Co. KY. Enlisted as a Private in Company E, 14th Cavalry Regiment Kentucky.
William Napier/Napper's muster roll enlistment to Diamonds 10th Cavalry KY regiment. Enlistment in Wolfe Co at Campton 1 April 1863. He was enlisted by D. F. Swango to Co A, a regimental corporal who was killed in action and an integral part of the 10ths operations. Co A was transferred to Co E by Edwin Trimble the commanding officer of which the 10th Cav was named before he was killed in action at the Battle of Saltville, 2 October 1864. The muster roll does not show which Co came first, only that A to E or vice versa occurred. Parts of the 10th were also known as the 13th Cav to alleviate confusion at the War Dept. Is such the case also with the 14th? If so, then it makes sense that William enlisted in the 10th Cav Muster Roll but is a soldier that served in the 14th. This is also the same William whose brother, McCager Napier, served in the 10th alongside him. McCager enlisted in the 10th Cav KY 1 January 1863 but deserted 6/29/63. (Desertion in the records often ment the soldier was away for good reason, even in the hospital.)
He was killed sometime after this June 1863 record the last record found.
This unconfirmed note was posted on the web: "William was rumored to have died during the Civil War. It's believed he died in Estill Co., Kentucky and was buried in a soldier's cemetery that had a marker with the soldiers names listed there. The location of this monument was not known."
"Yes, my great-grandfather William David was killed in the Civil War. Someone was with him called Grant Roberts? I wondered if he was from the Roberts family? William was captured in Winchester, Kentucky and made to walk to Ravenna, (Estill Co.) Kentucky where he was killed by Union soldiers - they made a sport in killing him by shooting the buttons off his uniform. This Grant Roberts must have survived the war as the story could not have been passed down. If you find that name anywhere in the family it would be most interesting. The only other thing I know is Dad took my brother through Harlan, Kentucky one time and he said this was William's property. He owned a lot of land, but he never owned slaves. It looks like all this land was passed down to him from his father. (Grant Roberts of the right age is not in KY census or military records, although there are several G. Roberts in confederate records. The name may not have been remembered correctly.)
Dad left there around 1930 because he was sheriff in Chavies Ky, Perry County - near Hazard. Dad was with Sam Moore when he was shot in Chavies. It almost killed Dad and Sam lost the use of his arm. (Kay Monk, William's great-granddaughter)
In 1850 Perry Co. before William married, his family is living 8 households away from the sister of his future wife, her husband, James Allen, and family. Martha's sister is Nancy Roberts Allen,
The exact birth dates of the children are from rootsweb.com, but appear to come from Perry Co. Birth Records.
  P. C. Napier "is part owner of the Hazard Hardware Company" History of Kentucky p. 641 (estimated date published: 1925) This is Price Napier. William David Napier is a second cousin to Price Napier. This could identify the hardware store in the story that Lawrence Alley, Jr. remembered. Anna Engle is Price's mother. H. Engle (relationship not known) was an undertaker and operated the Hazard Hardware Co. in the early 1930's. William "Uncle Bill" Engle also was an owner sometime between 1920 and 1940. Samuel S. Moore, son by Martha's second marriage, owned a store of some kind and is more likely the person referred to by Lawrence Alley, Jr.

Note:   "Matilda Roberts (18) to William Napier (21), 10 Oct 1853"
The name Matilda, in the marriage record, is not found anywhere else. One census record has the middle initial "A". Matilda was only 16 and infladed her age to 18. This has to be the right record since no other William Napier or Matilda Roberts the right age is in the county in 1850. Also her brother John was married on the same day. Matilda is a common name in the Roberts and Napier families.
 Roberts, John (23), Noble, Sinda (20), (b. Breathitt Co.), 10 Oct.1853
