Note: c. 1765 - Philip Darr born, VA 6 May 1789 - Ebenezer Grubb (a neighbor of Conrad Darr) claims 2 white males over 16, himself, and Phillip Tarr [sic]. Ebenezer also claims 3 horses, and Philip Darr claims 2 horses. Source: 1789 Loudoun County Personal Property Tax Rolls, 1st Battalion, Chas Bennet, Commissioner, p. 9. >>Ed. note: The above entry implies that young Philip Darr (age about 24) is living with Ebenezer Grubb and possibly working as a farmhand. Ebenezer, William, Samuel (bothers?), and Richard Grubb (one of their sons?) all had farms generally adjacent to the Conrad Darr Farm, and William Grubb had actually assumed the lease for 100 acres of the original 340 acre Johan Conrad Darr farm in 1787. 29 Mar 1791 - Ebenezer Grubb (a neighbor of Conrad Darr) claims 2 white males over 16, himself, and Phillip Tarr [sic]. Ebenezer also claims 4 horses as the total for the household (Philip Darr may actually own one 1 or 2 of the horses). Source: 1791 Loudoun County Personal Property Tax Rolls, 1st Battalion, Chas Bennet, Commissioner, p. 8. c 1792 - Philip Darr (age about 27) marries Hananh unknown (age about 17), Loudoun County, VA. 18 Jan 1793 - Sarah Darr born near Hillsboro, Loudoun, VA. 12 Mar 1793 - Philip Darr shown as having 1 white male over sixteen (himself) and 1 horse. Source: 1793 Loudoun County Personal Property Tax Rolls, p. 9. 22 Apr 1794 - Phillip Tarr [sic] shown as having 1 white male over sixteen (himself) and 1 horse. Cunard Tarr [sic] (brother?) is shown on previous line and as paying his taxes on the same date. Source: 1794 Loudoun County Personal Property Tax Rolls, 1st Battalion, Chas Bennet, Commissioner, page not numbered. >>Locator note: Due to the very close proximity between Philip Darr and his possible brother, Conrad Darr, throughout a number of tax years, it is assumed that they lived nearly side by side, or even that Philip "may" have worked on occasion as a tenant on Conrad's 140 acre farm. All indications suggest that the Conrad Darr Farm (a 140 acre tract of his father Johan Conrad Darr's original 340 acre farm) was just northwest of Hillsboro, Loudoun, VA in a region locally known as "Between the Hills." Entries further suggest it was just west of Dawsons Gap, which would place it about 1.55 miles NW of Hillsboro. This is supported by Yardley Taylor's 1857 map of Loudoun County which shows a "W. Grubb" and a "J. Grubb" living generally near the western end of the road (current secondary stub road 750) which at that time crossed eastward over Dawsons Gap on Short Hill Mountain. An earlier William Grubb is known to have obtained the lease for 100 acres of the Johan Conrad Darr Farm. 11 Sep 1794 - Philip Tar [sic] is listed as member of "Class No. 5, Captain Jno. McIlhanney's Comp'y, 2nd Battn. 56th Regiment, Loudoun Militia." Source: Don Blinco Sr, Loudoun County Virginia Militia Journals 1793-1829 (Iberian Publishing Company, Athens, Georgia, 1993), p. 7. >>Ed. note: Conrad Tar [sic] is shown on the same company roster for the same date, but in "Class No. 6." As a note of explanation, in the VA militia system at that time, "class" refers only to the order in which to be called up in an emergency - once having served, a class would then revert back down to "Class No. 10," and then repeat the revolving increased-readiness status as various emergencies arose. For some reason, even though tax districts were organized/listed by battalion numbers, they most often did not directly correlate to the battalion number in which the local white males of military age (16+) actually served. In this particular roster, even though virtually all of the names are clearly from the 1st Bn. tax district, they are serving in the 2nd. Bn. of militia. Perhaps an earlier realignment in the militia was not also reflected in the tax district naming schemes. 20 Apr 1795 - Phillip Tarr [sic] and Cunard Tarr [sic] (brother?) are shown on adjoining lines as both having paid their tax on the same date. Source: Greene County taxes, 1817. >>Ed. note: Based on similar known Greene County tax entries for the period, this entry implies that Philip Darr had sold the 100 acre tract and moved in 1816 or or 1817, and that for tax purposes, one Jonathan Newborn now owned that tract. 31 Aug 1818 - (son) Greenbury Darr born Cumberland Twp, Greene County PA. 1820 - Phillip Darr household shown in 1820 census for Cumberland Twp with household including: 3 free white males under 10 1 free white male 10-16 1 free white male 26-45 Philip? 1 free white females under 10 1 free white female 10-16 1 free white female 26-45 Hannah? 1 free white female 45 and over Source: 1820 Greene County, PA census, p. 337. 1826 - (son) Nelson Darr born Cumberland Twp, Greene County PA. 1830 - Phillip Darr household shown in Cumberland Twp 1830 census with household including: 1 free white male 5-10 2 free white males 10-15 2 free white males 15-20 1 free white male 60-70 Philip? 1 free white females 20-30 1 free white female 50-60 Hannah? The deed describes the land as being in Cumberland Twp and laying along the road from Waynesburg to Greensboro, but excludes a small tract of land fenced off by Charles Burk. Source: Greene deeds 57:80. >>Ed. note: This deed, while entirely consistent with the premise that Philip Darr lived on or near Blaker's Ridge in the SW corner of Cumberland Twp, is also interesting in that even though Philip Darr had paid taxes in Cumberland Twp in 1830, he is now listed as living in Greene Twp, which lays immediately west of this portion of Cumberland Twp. 10 Mar 1838 - Philip Darr wife Hannah sell 24 acres to Charles Burke for $260.
