c. Note:   l 17, 1879 in Nieuw Beerta Netherlands to Harbert Jans Smid and Geessien Jans Jansen. Nieuw Beerta is just a few miles from the border with Germany. Near the end of the 19th century, crops weren't very good and land was scarce for growing families in the area. If you wanted to buy land, it was very difficult. Most young people growing up worked for others who owned the land and even if land became available so many people wanted to buy it that a lottery system was put in place. In the United States, the Homestead Act made land affordable and accessible. These were some of the reasons many of the German and the Dutch people in the area immigrated to the United States.
Harmen immigrated to the United States in 1890 at age 11 with his parents and 5 of his brothers and sisters (Hendrik "Henry", Jan "John", Geessien "Sena", Aaltje "Alice", and Harmke "Minnie", who was an infant). Also along with them was Theus Fransen, who would later marry Harm's sister, Truda. The group arrived in New York from Antwerp, Belgium on April 16, 1890 and made their way to Illinois where they joined the rest of Harbert and Geessien's children, Klaas, Truda, and Antje. They had immigrated in two seperate ships a year earlier. The family would change their name to Smith to make it sound more "American."The family lived and worked as farm laborers in and around the Stephenson County area of Illinois near Freeport. They may have worked for people who paid their way to the United States, although I have no evidence of that. I just know that many people came here with financial help from land owners in the United States. Klaas, Hendrik, Truda, Antje and Geessien all married and lived in Holman Township in Osceola County, Iowa before 1895, because in that year the rest of the Smith family moved to that same area in Iowa. Both Klaas and Henry's families moved to South Dakota by the time the 1900 Federal Census came around. Harbert and Geessien and part of their family remained in the Sibley area during that census time frame.Harmen's sister, Truda, had married Theus Fransen in 1896 and they lived near Sibley as did his sister Geessien, who had married George Auen. The family members that were in Iowa with the main family in 1900 were: Herbert Smith (Harbert Jans Smid), age 60 Sena Smith (Geessien Jans Jansen), age 57 John Smith (Jan Smid), age 28 Herman Smith (Harm Smid), age 20 Alice Smith (Aaltje Smid), age 14 Minnie Smith (Harmke "Minnie" Smid), age 11By late 1900, according to the Federal Census, they also moved to the De Smet / Lake Preston area of South Dakota. Harmen's brothers, Klaas and Henry each were farming a quarter section of land and their father, Harbert would purchase a quarter section near them. The map to the right shows the families land near De Smet in 1909. Simon J. Bogue was the husband of Harmen's sister, Alice.Harmen and his brother, John, became naturalized citizens together on June, 7, 1904.Sometime after arriving in De Smet, South Dakota, Harmen met Katie Johnson, from the Le Mars, Iowa area in Plymouth County. I used to believe that he may have met Katie when he lived near Sibley, Iowa while working, but I have discovered that Katie's sister Rosa Johnson and her husband Max Schulke married and were living in Kingsbury County by 1902. They had a daughter, Eva in 1904 and and a son Max, who died in 1905. Katie probably visited them and met Harmen at one of those times. In De Smet, Harmen lived with his parents, then built a house just west of his father's house, which would eventually become the family home of 9 children when he married Katie Johnson on March 7, 1906 in De Smet, South Dakota.I was born in 1950, and by the time I was 4 or 5, Harmen couldn't get around as well as he had in his younger days. He was content to let the boys that were still home do the work. He liked to sit in his chair and smoke his pipe. He would take me outside, get in his car, a late 40's or early 50's, green Chevy, and drive down to check out the cows at the windmill and water tank. Of course, that was maybe 50 yards to the north of the house, but he drove anyway. I remember how cold that water was. The cows would be drinking from one side of the tank as the windmill would pump water, and we would dip our hands in the other side of the tank and drink water from the same tank. I don't suppose that happens today. The farmyard picture just above and to the right is from a much earlier time than I remember, but you can see some of the cars, wagons, and an F-20 Farmall tractor that my father, George ended up with. If you look at the building in the upper right, that was Harbert and Geessien's original home. In the 1950's, when I was old enough to snoop around, it was boarded up and basically a shell of an old home - and yes, they banned me from going in there, but somehow I found a way to check it out.The family went through some tough times in the 1930`s, but like most families, they managed. I know they farmed the lake bed of Lake Henry during the dry years. They learned to save everything. The front porch was a kid`s dream - lined with coffee cans and tobacco tins that were each filled with treasures and junk.Harmen would drive to town and once in a while, I got to go along. The thing was, that at 5 years old, I could have probably walked as fast as Harmen drove. I remember people honking their horns as they drove around him, but that really didn't faze Harmen. My father, George, tells a story of him and Calvin on their way to town with their father in the back seat. On the way, they met one of their friends, so they sped up to pass them. Harmen got very irritated with them for going so fast, but as they passed their friend, he put on a big smile and thumbed his nose at them.Harmen died peacefully of old age on January 2, 1959 at the age of 79. He had gotten a bit testy in his later years, and his son Calvin acted as a buffer between him and Katie.
