Note: Information from Mary Johnston Mary was born in Huron SD on April 7, 1930. She lived there for a year and a half before moving with her family to California.
While they were in California, she fell out a second story window, crushing her windpipe and cutting a hole in her throat . She could not talk right for several years. The kids picked on her and called her deaf and dumb.
The family moved to De Smet SD where mom attended first through third grades. A teacher helped teach her to talk when she was 7 years old. The teacher worked with and encouraged her until she was able to recite a poem to the class.
She attended fourth and fifth grades in Huron and then returned to De Smet for sixth grade through tenth. She dropped out of high school in the tenth grade to go to beauty school in Watertown where she completed 1500 hours in beauty school but couldn’t work because she was not yet 18.
Mary stayed with Mr. & Mrs. Rusty Anderson, a sheriff, in Timber Lake, where she joined the rodeo as a trick rider.
In 1947 she was in a snow queen contest sponsored by Ford Motors in Mobridge SD.
She received first runner up.
At 19 she moved back to De Smet where she met a guy in a convertible. (George). She married this stud on Sept 17th, 1949 and had 6 children.
