h. Note:   here my grandfather, Robert Young, came from except for small snippets of information I learned from family members here and there. Once in a great while, he would stop by for a day or two and see his family and grandchildren and then disappear again. My father always said he knew when grandpa would be coming because the wind would blow for three straight days. He explained further, that my grandfather was rather windy. It didn`t take long to realize that yes, he had some whopper stories - some just to keep me entertained, but some even I didn`t quite believe - even as a youngster. He always seemed to have a story that would "one up" the next person`s story and he really like to exaggerate a bit - OK, he exaggerated a lot. I guess it`s understandable, he wasn`t around much and wanted to make a good impression.Johnston, not Young - I wondered why my mother`s maiden name was Johnston, when my grandfather`s last name was Young. At that time, I didn`t get much of an explanation. It just made the mystery of this man even greater. I knew several of my mother`s brothers and sisters and knew they had been scattered around South Dakota and Minnesota when they were very young but not much more than that. I also was always given the impression that we had Indian blood from this side of the family, but I have yet to actually document that fact except that several of the family members had darker skin than many people.Early Young`s - At this time, I don`t have a lot of information on the early Young family - the earliest information is Alexander Young, born in 1812. Some indications show Alexander was born in Germany, and some show he was born in Kentucky. I`m not sure at this time if either of those are correct, but I have found where he was living as far back as 1840, so I`ll search from there. At this time, I would bet he came from Kentucky.Early Life - From what I have gotten from family and finally his birth certificate, Robert Young was born on July 25, 1898 in Decatur, Burt County, Nebraska to George Washington Young and Hester A. Fiscus. He grew up in Nebraska and registered with the Army on September 12, 1918. At the time he registered, he was working for his brother, Jim Young, doing farm work in Nebraska. After he was discharged, he bounced around doing farm work in Nebraska. The 1920 census shows him still working as a hired hand on his brother Jim`s farm in Thurston County, Nebraska.South Dakota - Eventually he would wind up in Huron, South Dakota using the name of Jack Everett Johnston - the story I have heard is that he liked the fighter Jack Johnson and decided to change his name to something similar. There may have been some more sinister reasons he changed his name, and knowing my grandfather the way I did, anything was possible.Using that name (although it is spelled as Johnson and not Johnston on the license itself), he married Edna Bertha Fell on December 9, 1923 in Beadle County, South Dakota (she was also listed as Edna Edith Fell in the 1930 census records). Edna had a young son, James before they were married from a previous relationship. I`m not sure if James was legally adopted or not, since he used the last name of Fell for a time when he was in school according to my mother. Eventually, however, he would take on the Johnston name as would the rest of the children born to Robert and Edna.Children - Jack and Edna would have seven children of their own together before Edna died of cancer in 1942 in Dr. Tschetter`s office in Huron, South Dakota. It was almost three years after they were married, when the family was in Wolsey, South Dakota, near Huron, that Norman Lee "Blackie" Johnston was born on July 13, 1926. He was born on the farm as most children were born at home in those days. Jack (Robert) always worked on farm labor and was probably working on a farm at that time.Jesse Willard Johnston came along on April 21, 1928 in Huron, South Dakota. Two years later, on April, 7, 1930, Mary Ellen Johnston was born in Huron. The family would live in Huron another couple of years or so and another daughter, Bonnie May Johnston was born on December 16, 1931. It wasn`t long after that the family moved to Los Angeles, California. Jack (Robert) had a sister, Anna, working for a television studio in California and she convinced the family their kids had a chance to audition for a new television series. So the packed up the kids and went to seek their fortune. Patsy Jo Ann Johnston would come along on October 31, 1934 in Los Angeles, but things didn`t work out after the auditions and Edna was feeling lonesome for her family back home. The family moved back to Huron and then to De Smet where Edna`s mother, Augusta, was living. Mary Johnston reports that Edna had a miscarriage around November of 1936 in De Smet - a boy.Edna Dies - The family lived in De Smet until around the time Sally Johnston was born on November 22, 1938. It must have been shortly after her birth that family moved to Huron for two years, but returned back to De Smet to live. This was about the time that Jack (Robert) was in trouble for lack of child support. From what I understand, he went to jail or prison for not supporting the family. Edna probably wanted to go back to De Smet to be closer to her mother and family. There, she has cancer and after treatments and trips to Huron to see the doctor, she dies on November 24, 1942 at the young age of 42. Story has it that Jack would not drive her to her cancer appointments in Huron nor would he allow her to drive, so she would hitch a ride to Huron and back. The girls are taken in by Edna`s mother, Augusta Bertha Back. I`m not sure where their father ends up for the next several years.Later Life - About 1973 or so, Robert Johnson, he`s using his real name by now, drives an old truck pulling about a thirty foot trailer home into my parent`s place in De Smet, South Dakota. I had just graduated from college and was working in De Smet, so the years are fairly accurate. My mother, Mary, and her sister, Patsy lived next to each other and Bonnie lived in town, so Robert had three daughters close by. His other daughter, Sally would drop by from time to time, so I believe he made peace with them at that time. It wasn`t long and he was found to have lung cancer and spent time in the hospital in Huron. There he had one of his lungs and half of the other removed. He was a tough bird, however, and pulled through. I don`t think anyone believed he would leave the hospital, but he did.Robert Dies - He was weak for a long time but eventually gained his strength moved out to Colusa, California. I`m not positive, but I believe his sister Anna was somewhere in the area. There, he died in December of 1983 and there he is buried. Edna was buried in the cemetery in De Smet.
