Notes
a. Note:   Fred & Ethel Chatham
Fred Lee Chatham was born in Jefferson County, Kansas, May 14, 1892 to Levin James and Naomi (Eshom) Chatham. In growing up, Fred, knew how to work. His Dad bought farms, grown up with cockleburs and brush. With his children's help, he cleaned up the land, developed it into a producing farm, then he would sell it and buy another farm that needed fixing up.
In his early 20's, Fred bought a team of horses, a grain wagon, filled it with supplies and headed for Colorado. He filed on a site located along North Horse Creek, northwest of Springfield, June 9, 1914. His brother, Elmer, had filed on a site a few years earlier on South Horse Creek, 1 1/2 miles from Fred's claim.
Ethel Etta Chenoweth was born in Douglas County, Kansas, January 6, 1894, to Daniel McLean and Joanna (Donegia) Chenoweth. When Ethel was two years old, she, her two sisters and mother came to Lamar by train. Her dad met them and brought them by wagon to Baca County. Ethel's dad and brothers, had come earlier to file on sites and to build a house. Ethel grew to womanhood on her Dad's homestead on North Horse Creek.
Fred met Ethel at church at North Liberty School. When Fred and Ethel decided to get married, they went to Ethel's brother-in-law, J.W. Hazel, who was a minister. At the time, he was out in the pasture building fences. He married them right there, April 14, 1915. Fred and Ethel had six children, Ray, Oran, Ola, Vernon, Frank and Vela.
During the dust bowl days, Fred and his family were one of the few who stayed, fighting the save the soil from blowing away. While proving his claim and raising his family, Fred drove freight between Lamar and Springfield. He also hauled broom corn to Elk hart, Kansas. He made many trips to the Cedars to cut wood and fence posts.
Fred was active in organizing the Springfield Co-op. He served on the Board of Directors as their first treasurer. He served on the North Liberty School board many years. He assisted Claud Bosly in laying the rock walls when the Methodist Church was build, riding his horse or walking between his farm and Springfield (a good 8 1/2 miles cross county one way).
Fred bought his brother's homestead after his death, also the Lewis Skinner homestead. He raised registered Horned Herefords, then later changed to the registered Polled Herefords. Eventually, he turned his farming and ranching over to his sons, Oran and Vernon.
Ethel was a good neighbor and helped in childbirth or sickness. She passed away December 20, 1948.
In his later years, Fred came back to his homestead, milking cows, raising chickens and growing a big garden. He loved to go to Springfield to get rid of his cream, eggs and garden produce and to visit friends. Fred passed away August 22, 1978.

 --The Family of Fred Chatham
History written by Ola (Chatham) Schibblehut, daughter of Fred Chatham:
The first year, for me, back to Kansas to see our Grandparents was 1920. When we got there from Colorado most of the cousins close by would come to the Grandparents. We would have abundant and delicious meals.
While the big folks talked, we were turned loose to play. As I was only one year old, we were all under the table playing with toys, I lost my temper and got in a fight with Wilford Chatham. I was nicknamed, "Miss Fisty."
It was always fun to go to the Grandparents. We all sang with Grandma and recited Bible verses, which we had learned out of the little testament she had given us.
Grandpa always sat on the porch with us and sang some of his old navy songs and told us funny stories about his life.
Our Dad, Fred Chatham, and Uncle Elmer came out West and homesteaded in Colorado. They both got their land in 1914, just across the hill from each other. It was about eight miles from Springfield. Dad started going to church at North Liberty School house. They had choir practice and they ran short of books. He had to share his book with a young lady, whom he shared his life with for 33 years. Fred and Ethel (Chenoweth) were married April 14, 1915. to this union six children were born.
Dad was a very hard working man. He raised cows, farmed and milked cows. He put out a big garden and all the neighbors and his family were well fed. He was always busy, even milked his old milk cow two days before he died.
He passed away in a Springfield Hospital at age 86 years, 3 months and 8 days. He was laid to rest by (beside) his beloved wife of 33 years in the Springfield Cemetery August 25, 1978. Also proceeding him in death are his sons, Ray, Vernon (Vernon died in 1987, not before his Dad) and Frank.
