Notes
a. Note:   "Daniel McClain Chenoweth was a stately man with a moustache and the ability to entertain children. He told of leaving Barber County, West Virginia with a team of white horses and buggy in 1899, headed for the Oklahoma land rush. Being unsuccessful due to "Sooners" he came to Baca County and filed on his claim nine miles north and one west of Springfield. This land remains in the Chenoweth name. He told of returning to West Virginia to bring the three eldest children, all his livestock and machinery to Lamar by railroad box car. The remainder of the trip was by wagon. His wife Joanna and three younger children arrived a year later.
A favorite story was how Lord Baltimore had married a Chenoweth and due to land rights perhaps we shared in Baltimore. Each child had his "special" property, thus a version of poor man's monopoly.
Granddad loved fruit trees and fishing ponds and instilled his love in his family. Peanuts were his other love and he always had some to share with all." --Copied from the Baca County History Book
"Daddy said to tell you that Grandaddy Chenoweth did some gold mining on the west side of Two Buttes mountain. He didn't get rich on it, for the gold was soon played out. He raised cattle mainly for his living. He basically farmed with horses and only raised feed for his cattle and horses. He also did black-smithing and all kinds of work on wagons, including wheel rebuilding. Daddy had his tire shrinker that shrinked steel rims on wheels. (Until they were destroyed in the fire in which Dad (Vernon Chatham) was killed.) Granddad Chenoweth was one of the 1st ones to have a telephone in Baca County."
 P.S.
"We still have a rocking chair that Granddad brought from Virginia. Ralph Kelsey told Daddy that Granddad Chenoweth's dad came from Irland. He worked his way over on a boat. Settled in Barbor County, West Virginia. There is a slight discrepancy to the story above. Mother Chatham was born in Douglas County Kansas. The way your dad had heard the story was they they came to Kansas from Virginia by covered wagon, then from Kansas on out here by train." --Mary Spitzer Chatham in a letter (no date) but believed to have been written in 1990-91 when Ben or Sarah Chatham were doing a family history in Middle school at Grand Rapids, MN.
