  From Susan Milbauer Schultz:
I believe our great grandfather (Johann) Konrad/Conrad Hangartner (1861-1943) was Catholic in Switzerland. Some Hangartner sisters (sisters of our grandparents such as Clara Hangartner Schneider) visited Altstatten many years ago and also reported no records found in protestant church there they but didn`t go to the Catholic Church in Altstatten to ask to see any Hangartner records there. Conrad`s father had died in 1869 when Conrad was a young boy. (I believe Guido & Robert Hangartner are also Catholic. )
When Conrad Hangartner came to USA in 1881 another brother, (Johann) Jacob Jake Hangartner (1845-1897) had already settled near my home town of Marion, Waupaca County, WI (listed in 1880 Waupaca County, Wi Census) and probably helped Conrad when he first arrived in Marion, Wisconsin. Conrad was then told about Ernestine Kuschel, who also arrived & settled between Marion & Clintonville, WI about the same time Conrad arrived and Ernestine Kuschel was Lutheran. Therefore Conrad Hangartner changed to Lutheran for her when they married in 1885. Another reason Conrad Hangartner changed from Catholic to Lutheran is because a Catholic Church didn`t exist in Marion until coincidentally my great grandparents, Lawrence & Kate (Lamers) Milbauer moved to Marion from Sheboygan County about 1887. Lawrence & Kate Milbauer started having Catholic services in their home in Marion and were the main founders of St. Mary`s Catholic Church in Marion, WI. However Kate (Lamers) Milbauer died when my grandfather Ed Milbauer was a young boy and Lawrence sold the blacksmith shop in Marion to Edward as a very young man while Lawrence was in pursuit of 3 other wives and ended up in Michigan. Therefore my grandfather, Ed Milbauer, was born Catholic but also changed to Lutheran to marry my grandmother, Flora (Hangartner) Milbauer. Next my brother, Tom Milbauer, married a Catholic, and since his daughters were being raised Catholic at St. Mary`s Catholic Church in Marion, he converted and is buried at St. Mary`s Catholic Church Cemetery in Marion next to Kate (Lamers) Milbauer & twins who died shortly after birth.
Note:   Twin sister Anna Barbara. Immigrated on 18 May 1881 on the ship Qereire
