 History
The Grace Dart Extended Care Centre arose from the 1999 merger of twoinstitutions that have been part of the scene in Montreal 's east endfor more than a century. The Grace Dart Hospital, situated at 6085 Sherbrooke Street East , was founded in 1907 by Henry J. Dart and named in honour of his daughter Grace, who died of tuberculosis in 1898. Forover 60 years, the hospital was a sanatorium. Today, this facility iscalled the Grace Dart Pavilion, and has 101 beds.
The second facility, known today as the Extended Care Site, was called the Montreal Protestant House of Industry and Shelter when it was founded in 1863. This shelter was established on land that was part of the Dubois firm, bequeathed by Thomas Molson. The building situated at5155 Sainte- Catherine Street East was opened in 1885 to accommodate poor and elderly Protestants. Today, it has 280 beds.
For years, the Grace Dart Extended Care Centre's priority has been toserve English-speaking clients in Montreal . As the result of recent changes, the Centre now serves clients from Montreal 's West Island . Bilingualism is therefore an essential requirement in providing our services, while cultural diversity gives added colour to the Grace Dart Extended Care Centre's daily ambiance.
onsidering the age of its century-old buildings, the Grace Dart Extended Care Centre has begun to organize a move to the West Island , which will bring it closer to its clients and allow it to upgrade its facilities in accordance with the new living environment standards.
