  Land records from Minnesota show that Rufus Colby bought 160 acres on April 2, 1857 in Red Wing, Goodhue County.
 On June 20, 1876 he homesteaded in Alexandria with 144 acres.

  Rufus Colby owned land in Douglas County and I found the land transfer records at the courthouse in Alexandria. There is no death record for him in this county nor any probate record. He obtained a patent on land 20 June 1876, filing for the homestead 5 August 1875. He later sold the land to John Cooley and James Runyan on October 6, 1879. The legal description was the North half of the Northwest quarter and Lots 1 & 2 of section 33 and Lot 5 of section 28, all being in Township 128, Range 37 of Douglas County.
