In almost all official documents and on his tombstone his name is spelled "Herschel" but it was related to me by several of his children that he spelled it "Hershal." The only official documents his name is spelled correctly in are his marriage licence and the 1940 census.

Hershal's first automobile was a brand new 1916 Model T Ford, which he bought for his growing family on July 1, 1916. 12 years later he bought a new 1928 Model A Fordor Sedan, which he kept 14 years, and after that he bought a new 1942 Ford Super De Luxe Fordor Sedan, which he kept 16 years, until 1958, the last year he drove. They were all purchased in LaFayette, AL.
The 1942 car was special, as Ford halted its car and truck lines on February 10, 1942, to begin war production, but not before a short run of 1942 cars was built. (Wikipedia)
Preston got the Model T, Harvey got the Model A and Marion got the De Luxe.
