His step-neice Shirley Boles Hodge related to me (Hank Rogers) that he sat all the kids down one day and told them the story. He said he wanted them to know the truth, not rumor. This was his story. Adell had been married before to a woman he deeply loved. They had an infant girl, Rosie. Adell found out his wife had been having an affair with a local deputy sheriff, who would arrive at the farm after Adell had gone to work. Adell confronted the man and told him never to show his face on Adell's property again, or he would kill him. The next morning Adell acted as if he were going to work, but hid in some brush on the road to the farm, ready with a shotgun. Sure enough, here came the deputy sheriff, and went to the house where Adell's wife was waiting for him. Adell came up on him in the yard and shot him dead point blank. Well, he had been warned! Adell was from a wealthy Texas family. In the first trial, Adell had shady representation and was given the death penalty. His family sold everything and hired a top-notch lawyer from Dallas and on appeal was given life in prison. His family pulled strings and bought him a job as??? While in prison, his wife divorced him, which broke his heart. The above comes directly to me from Shirley, who heard it directly from Adell. I wrote it just as told. Adell was not a violent or angry man. He was quite the opposite, he was loving, kind, gentle and loyal. It was his love and loyalty to his first wife that caused him to try to protect her. He was married to Gracie for 32 years. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Publication unknown date about Jan. 7, 2001 Page unknown Adell Allen Adell Allen, 88, of Newton died Jan. 3, 2001 at Jasper Memorial Hospital in Jasper.
