That Elisha may however be an uncle or cousin. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * OUR Elisha comes from Upson: 1826 - Upson Co., GA poll tax - no land listed, tax to vote. 1827 - Land Lottery - drew ? Co., GA, resident of Upson Co. (Record?) 1827 - Upson Co., GA poll tax - no land listed, tax to vote. 1827 - Listed as a delegate to Association Padaram Baptist Church - Flint River Baptist Association Minutes. (Flint River is Upson Co.) 1832 - Land Lottery - drew Floyd & Chattoga Co's., GA, resident of Upson Co. 1832 - Sold land in Floyd Co., GA (What did he do with the Chattoga Co. land?) 1837 - Upson Co., GA poll tax - owned 160 acres on Towledge Creek, no slaves. Overage on tax. (When did he purchase this land? When did he sell it?) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * According to census info, Elisha's father was born in NC, his mother in GA. Family lore has it Destie Rogers, daughter of Elisha Rogers married her second cousin James C. Rogers, Jr. James was the son of James C. Rogers, Sr. & Sarah E. Candler. James C. Rogers, Sr. was the son of Balaam Rogers & Charlotte E. Downey. That would make Elisha's father a brother to Balaam Rogers. I now (May 2013) believe that our Elisha was a brother to Balaam, not nephew. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Elisha is the patriarch of the Union Co., AR clan. Born in GA, nothing is really known of him until 1843 when he shows up in Union Co., AR, in a marriage to Milly Price. In the 1850 census he is in the household of William Gresham and single, a plantation overseer. In November of that year he would marry Rachel. After he and Rachel were married, they lived in a log house on the Gresham Plantation until Elisha bought the farm out on the Magnolia Highway, which at that time was Route 1, a dirt road to Magnolia. The farm was 4 miles west of El Dorado. I'm not sure if they had any children miscarry or infant death before their first child, Mandy, was born in 1856 and survived to adulthood. They had 6 known children, 5 of those lived to adulthood. The first years of their marriage are obscured by the mists of time. They lived on the Rogers farm, of just 80 acres, until after the Civil War. Their first 3 children were born on the Gresham Plantation, the rest on the Rogers farm. There is a story related by Minnie Goad Rogers in the 1970's saying the family packed up in covered wagons and moved to north Arkansas. This could explain why they are not in the 1870 Union Co. census. They are all back by 1879, when Mandy and Ola married. Tom bought a 160 acre farm in 1889 and Elisha bought a 40 acre lot next to it in 1890. Elisha died in 1892 and was buried in the family burial ground in the field just southeast of the old Rogers farm. I suspect Elisha may have been married before in GA or another southern state, and possibly other children, but I have as of yet been able to prove this. I have spent 20 years pouring over Georgia records from his time. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * From Julia Carriker Washington's Writings in twelve volumes, published 1840. These books have notes written by Robert Johnson Black as he studied them. January 15, 1845, Green Newton resigned and William G. Gresham was appointed to take his place on the commission on which Robert Johnson Black and John R. Hampton were still serving. The court ordered them to select and set aside certain lots in the city of El Dorado for churches, to draft a plan for a jail, and to lay off a graveyard of ample dimensions, to purchase a stove of convenient size for the courthouse, to select a location for a school house and to dig a public well. Seems this guy he was living with was a founder in the town of El Dorado.. and a officer in the city as well. I bet he moved his Slaves and the overseer with him when he came???? Yes, i was looking in old books and early ark county info..and he was one of the first treasurers, so his papers may be laying around in some archive..and may make mention of things.. who knows also, there was a family in the area in 1848 John A McKeller that was active in a church called hopewell missionary baptist. fyi Also.. the Gresham and Neal family is related. and it looks like Gresham spent time in Alabama on the way to Ark.. a few years perhaps.. maybe Rogers was there as well... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Written by Hank Rogers, June 8, 2010: Elisha Rogers - Early Union County Pioneer Passes Elisha Rogers, 91, of Union County, passed from this life on Friday, July 22, 1892, at his home 8 miles west of El Dorado on Route 1.
