She went to Hot Springs for the Thanksgiving holidays in 1904 to visit another daughter, Mandy Combs. She became ill and died 2 weeks after Thanksgiving and 6 days after her 79th birthday. Rachel's name is recorded in the family bible as McCullough, and other descendants have said her name was McCullar or McCuller. In the marriage record she is listed as Rachel Johnson. I cannot find a marriage for a Rachel McCullar/McCullough to a Mr. Johnson anywhere. It is said her parents were both 1/4 to 1/2 Native American. This is not correct, as her father's family was Scotch-Irish and her mother's English. In her daughter Ola Lawrence's funeral home record it states that Rachel was born in Marion Co., GA. Rachel's family was in Marion Co. before coming to Union Co., AR, but she was born in Wilkinson Co., GA where they were before Marion. Rachel either married Mr. Johnson in Georgia or on the way to Arkansas. It is unknown what happened to him. He was likely killed in an accident on the trip to Arkansas. I have no proof but I feel Rachel and her husband were travelling with her McCullar family to Union Co., AR to settle. Rachel is buried right beside her grandson Jewel Eugene Combs (07/15/1891-01/30/1904), son of William and Amanda Rogers Combs. The graves are in section 25, row 1. This use to be called the "Free Ground" section. I don't know why. Rachel does not now have a marker, but originally did. Sometime in the early 1990's some family members found a grave beside Jewel but the old stone was just in pieces and none with lettering. In 2010 there is nothing but a small hole where it use to be. If you are facing the writing on his stone she is on the right of him. I plan to have a new stone made for her. She was the widow of the late Elisha Rogers of Union County. She resided with her daughter Mrs. E. M. Hardin near El Dorado. Graveside services at Greenwood Cemetery in Hot Springs were handled by Gross Funeral Home. Born December 2, 1825 in Wilkinson County, Georgia, to Mr. & Mrs. Ben F. McCullar, she came to Union County about 1848 with her family where she married Mr. Rogers in 1850 and was a homemaker. She was the mother of 6 children, and gave one back to God's loving bosom. She was a Baptist. Survivors include two sons, T. J. & Dan Rogers, both of Union County; three daughters, Mrs. Mandy Combs of Hot Springs, Mrs. Ola Lawrence and Mrs. Destie Hardin, both of Union County, and 28 grand-children. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * I would love to move Rachel and Mandy from Hot Springs to Pate Cemetery.
