Lit slowly took poison in protest of his sons possibly being drafted into WWII. He eventually died from it.

Family legend has it Lit killed an FBI agent sent to investigate possible bootleg activity surrounding the Slaughter family. His father Daniel worked for Mr. Slaughter, and he convinced Lit that the agent was having an affair with his bride-to-be, Birdie Slaughter. A year later the man's body was found by a farmhand plowing a field.
I have not looked in newspaper records to try to verify any of it.

Littleton Rogers, 56, native of Union County, died late yesterday at his home on Route One after a brief illness.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Bertie Rogers; three sons, Gerald, Henry and George Rogers; one daughter, Nellie Rogers; one brother, N. C. Rogers of Kelly; one sister, Mrs. Lillie Smith, Route One.
Funeral services will be held sometime Wednesday in charge of Rumph Mortuary. Arrangements were not complete last night.
Bertie should be Birdie.
