Davis MG., at the residence of Peter Rowland. **** CO A 10 AL CAV REG C.S.A. **** He was not named after the famous statesman, Daniel Webster. He was named after his uncle Daniel Webster Tomlinson, as he was born on his birthday. **** Died @ age 29 of cancer. So sad that he valiantly served his country only to have the angel of death visit him 6 years later. **** He had one known child, a daughter named in his will, Mary W. Tomlinson. **** Unknown if he was a Mason like his father & older brother R.J. **** Enlisted April 10, 1862 at Fredonia, AL by Capt. Rowland for duration of the war. Paroled at Hillsboro, NC May 3, 1865. **** The 5th Cavalry Battalion of Hilliard's Legion was organized with five companies at Montgomery on 25 June 1862. It merged into the 10th Confederate Cavalry Regiment on 30 December 1862. Each company, "A" through "E", retained its original letter designation. **** Company A ''The David Compton Rangers'' - Chambers County - Muster roll dated Jul 7, 1862. This Company was later the 10th Confederate Cavalry Company A. Capt. Peter Rowland in charge. Tomlinson, Daniel W. - [Born 1842, died before 1874 Son-in-law of the Captain]. Also brothers Robert & William. **** Company A, The 10th Confederate Cavalry - Chambers County Alabama - Tomlinson, Daniel Corporal/Sergeant **** Will was written Mar. 29 , 1871, probated Jul. 24, 1871. **** Chambers County Will Book 3 1855-1895, Page 356 - State of Alabama, Chambers County - I, Daniel W. Tomlinson, of said County and State being of lawful age and of sound and disposing memory do make and declare this be my last will and testament. - Item 1st. I desire that all my just debts be paid out of the proceeds of my estate. - Item 2nd. That the residue and balance of my estate both real and personal be equally divided between my beloved wife Sarah E. Tomlinson and my daughter Mary W. Tomlinson and in the event of the death of my daughter Mary W. Tomlinson before she arrives of legal age or marries and has issue then and in that event my wife Sarah E. Tomlinson to have hold and own all my real and personal estate or the proceeds in case of sale. - Item 3rd. I hereby fully authorize and empower my executors herein after appointed after my decease to take charge of my estate both real and personal without bond or security and without being required to render any appraisement or inventory to any court as the expenses of annual settlement with courts but having full confidence in their prudence and piety much for them to so manage my said estate as they may think and deem will make to the best interest of my estate and contribute to the comfort and support both of my wife and the comfort, support and education of my daughter and that this be probated with as little expense as possible without newspaper publication as the expense of any other notices or litigation only the subscribing witness and the rendering of this will and that cash if possible be waived that is of publication. - Item 4th. I hereby appoint and constitute Peter W. Rowland and my wife Sarah E. Tomlinson my executor and executrix of this my last will and that one or both of them be authorized to execute the same, as witness my hand this the 29th day of March 1871. - Signed, sealed and delivered - D. Rowlin - 16 (Rowland, Sarah was a Rowland) * William Sherman - 19 * Anth. Tomlinson - 17 * There is a mulatto Anthony Tomlinson that show up in later census records. Anthony was very likely a former slave of the Tomlinson family.
