1984/??/?? Last game of golf at Datchet Golf Club with Ian, at Bert's request. Aged over 80. We were asked by the current golf professional to produce evidence of membership of another golf club, despite Bert having been a member of Stoke Poges Artisans Golf club for 40-50 years. Bert said: XYZ the previous pro wouldn't have asked that. The current pro scoffed that he had been at Datchet for 15 years and his predecessor (Albert?) had been there for over 30 years. Bert said: Yes, but I'm talking about XYZ - the one before (Albert?). The pro had to retire to his backroom to check the records. He returned and allowed us complimentary passes.
On the first tee, Bert said: "See that rough over there. That was laid to corn in the First World War". He then complained about the size of two huge trees in the middle of the first fairway. I thought they could be overcome. Bert said last time he played that course they were much smaller. How long ago was that? "Over forty years".
