 6ft 2ins at tallest. Red-Green Colour-blind. Learned to drive in the Army. Never took a civilian driving test. Had a 'welding' scar on his left shoulder. On duty on horse-back, it was common practice to reduce the rifle weight by impaling the bayonet in a nearby piece of wood.
 On one occasion, his horse reared and travelled the length of The Mall on its hind legs without him falling off.
 Fan of the comedian Tommy Cooper who was also in the Guards.

 1921/06/?? While his father returned to Bodmin, Cornwall, to marry his third wife, (Mar 1921?) the IRA / Sinn Fein attacked and burnt down the Rush Coastguard Station. He, his brother and sister, staying with neighbours at the time, only managed to escape by hiding in the furrows of a nearby potato field.
 This may have been the attack reported on June 20 1921 by The Times, in which 4 coastguard stations in County Dublin were burned the previous weekend: Skerries, Loughshinny, Rush and Rogerstown.
