Tithe apportionment for Wassell Mill 1851/03/30 Farmer and Miller of 108 acres employing 4 men, widow aged 62 (64?), of Wassal Mill, Streel's Lane, Kirdford, Sussex - HO107/1649 f.180 p.16 - born Petworth 1853/05/25 Will This is the last Will and Testament of me Clara Baker of Wassall Mill in the Parish of Kirdford in the County of Sussex Widow made this twenty-fifth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-three ffirst I appoint my daughter Emma Baker and my son in law Matthew Taylor to be Trustees and Executors in trust of this my last Will and Testament Also I direct that all my just debts funeral expenses and the expense of the probate and Executorship of this my Will shall be paid and discharged Also I give and devise unto my daughter Eliza Puttock the wife of James Puttock for her life all that and those my freehold messuages in two tene ments buildings farm lands and hereditaments containing thirty three acres more or less called (Rowland?) Farm or by any other names situate at Plaistow in the Parish of Kirdford aforesaid to hold the same unto the said Eliza Puttock for the term of her natural life for her own sole and separate use and benefit and free from the debts control or engagements of her present or any future husband and from and immediately after her decease I give and devise the same hereditaments and premises to the said James Puttock for the term of his life and from and immediately after the decease of the survivor of them I give and devise the same hereditaments and premises unto my Granddaughter Ffanny Puttock daughter of the said Eliza Puttock her heirs and assigns forever Also I give and devise unto my daughter Amelia Taylor the wife of the said Matthew Taylor for her life all that my freehold messuages and house and premises situate in Lombard Street in the Town of Petworth in Sussex and now in the occupation of Charles Garrett To hold the same unto the said Amelia Taylor for the term of her natural life for her own sole and separate use and benefit and free from the debt control or engagements of her present or any future husband and from and imme- diately after her decease I give and devise the same messuages and premises unto the said Matthew Taylor for the term of his life and === from and after the decease of the survivor of them I give and devise the said messuages and premises unto my granddaughter Mary Taylor the daughter of the said Amelia Taylor her heir and assigns for ever Also I give and devise unto my daughter Emma Baker all that any messuages two small cottages buildings farmlands and hereditaments <containing?> twenty four acres more or less called Gravatts and <?> Grove or by other names situate in the parish of Wisborough Green in the said County of Sussex be the same freehold or of whatever other tenure and also all <?> from the <?> belonging or adjacent thereto <?> <?> the same unto my said daughter Emma Baker and her assigns for the term of her life for her own sole and separate use and for <?> engagements of any husband Also I give and bequeath unto the said Emma Baker all that my messuage or cottage with the garden and orchard thereto belonging called <Furnace?> or by other name situate in Ebernow (Ebernoe) in the parish of Kirdford aforesaid be the same leasehold or of whatever other tenure To hold the same unto the said Emma Baker and her assigns for the term of her life for her own sole and separate use and free from the debts control or engagements of any husband and from and after her decease I give devise and bequeath all the aforesaid here- ditaments and premises so devised and bequeathed to her for life as afore- said unto any husband who she may marry and who may survive her for the term of his life and from and after the decease of such husband or her own decease if she shall die without leaving a husband her surv- iving I give devise and bequeath all the same hereditaments and premises unto the first son of my said daughter and his heirs <?> <?> === === or good >?< security all <?> arising under this my Will and not imme- diately <?> for the purposes thereof and from time to time to vary alter or change my securities as they may think proper without being answerable for any loss thereby occasioned In witness whereof I the said Clara Baker the testatrix have to this my last Will and Testament contained in four sheets of paper annexed together set my hand on each sheet thereof the day and year first above written - Clara Baker - Signed by the above-named Clara Baker the Testatrix in the presence of us who being pre- sent at the same time in her presence and at her request and the presence of each other have subscribed our names as witnesses the several erasures and interlineations in the margin opposite to which we have set our initials being first name - Arthur Quaintrey of Petworth Solicitor - James Philpott his Clerk Proved at London 8th Dec 1853 before the Judge by the oaths of Emma Baker spinster the daughter and Matthew Taylor the executors to whom Admon was granted having been first sworn by oaths duly to administer 1853/09/19 Widow of Charles Baker, Miller, of Wassal Mill, Streel's Lane, Kirdford, Sussex, aged 67 (66?) 1853/12/08 Probate
