Volunteering in September 1914, he was sent to the Western Front in the following June, and acting as a sniper, was in action in many important engagements, including those at Arras, Ypres, the Somme and Passchendaele, and was twice wounded. Transferring to India in December 1916, he assisted to restore order in the rioting at Calcutta and served at various stations on guard and other important duties.
