Note: {geni:about_me} THREE AMERICAN FAMILY MEMBERS KILLED IN PHILIPPINES CRASH AP , Associated Press Dec. 2, 1988 5:31 AM ET MANILA, PHILIPPINES MANILA, Philippines (AP) _ A single-engine plane crashed in the mountains of the southern island of Mindanao, killing three Americans and the Filipino pilot, the U.S. Embassy said today. The embassy identified the victims as Zaire Froats, 61, of Reno, Nev., her daughter, Lea Froats, 34, and son Tad, no age available. The pilot was identified as Manuel Cabal. An embassy official said Mrs. Froats and her son were visiting the daughter, who was a medical missionary in Mindanao. Their chartered Grumman aircraft took off from an airstrip in Malabang, 530 miles south of Manila, but crashed about 15 minutes later. The plane was en route to Iligan, about 50 miles north of Malabang, officials said. Antonio Babijes, chief of the Rescue Coordination Center, said a school principal in the municipality of Piagapo reported seeing the plane crash in nearby mountains. A search team reached the site later and confirmed the four deaths, he said. Babijes said he did not know if the bodies had been retrieved because of poor communications in the area. No other details were immediately available.
