Note: he family were still quite young - Sarah Ann was 19, James was 15, Mary Jane 12, Hannah was 6 and their second child named John, was only 3 years old. Susan would have been 10, she is believed to have died in England but no dates have been found as yet. These ages were gleaned from old, handwritten pieces of paper giving the day, date and hour of births and deaths, found in James and Meriahs family bible which later passes to their youngest son John in Michigan. Some dates were also found in the Mormon records at Salt Lake City.To spend 5 or 6 weeks on a sailing vessel with so many young children must have been quite an ordeal especially as they encountered storms during the crossing. No proof has been found as to where they landed or of their journey to the Brantford area. It could be assumedthat they arrived in New York and sailed up the Hudson River and the Erie Canal, which opened up this area in 1825. Then overland to the Burford area where they are reported tohave stayed with the Edmunds family. James is reported to have lived with George during his last days in Beverly Township near Troy, Ontario, and it was there both he and Meriah died 10 days apart in September 1866. They are buried in Troy cemetery. The gravesite has been located but there is no stone. They are buried under a spruce tree, the remainder of the lot was sold to Lawrence Flewelling and is marked by a big black gravestone.
