Notes
a. Note:   This from Margaret Walch: " She told of waiting in a shelter asbombs burst nearby during the Franco-Prussian war. Th e people(rich & poor) were blaming each other for causing the trouble. The rich accused the poor saying that they caused it by notworking hard enough; the poor said that the rich caused by theirgreed. Her comment was 'why were they doing this when they wereboth in danger of dying?'". "She was to have sung in thecathedral in Strasburg but didn't because that was when herfamily came to America in 1878. She was 15 years old. Hernative language was French, she learned German when she startedschool in 1871. She was 6 years old when the Germans tookAlsace- Lorraine back from France. Her step-mother DorotheaWathley sold her hair to pay the passage to America." Marie Gastis buried at Saint Bernard Cemetary on Maple Street in Akron,Ohio. This is from Lawrence Klein: She got lost in New York, separated from her family. She was crying on a street cornerand talking in French. A French sailor heard her and helped herfind her family.
