Notes
a. Note:   George and his wife Mary Ann (Sykes) Bristow left their nativehome for America in the early 1830's, perhaps even 1828-1829.They settled in Portland, Maine, but may have lived for a timein Massachusetts. We will never know why the Bristows lefttheir native land for America, but it could have been due to theIndustrial Revolution in Yorkshire County. The Bristows livedin a farming community and in nearby Hull. The influx of peopledrawn to the area for work in the many factories was amazing.Perhaps the Bristows left for better opportunities in a new landwhere farming opportunities were plentiful. The industrialrevolution, especially the steel industry, brought opportunityfor many, but the skilled craftsmen and farmers struggled tomake a living. The machines now could produce more quickly thanmanpower and many Yorkshire men were unemployed. Also theincreased population made way for terrible sanitary conditions,as people simply threw their garbage into the streets. Epidemicsof Cholera occurred, as well as many deaths from Tuberculosis. As a result, the passing of the Public Health Act occurred in1848. The Bristows left in the early 1830's and landed on theeast coast of Maine.
