a. Note:   Sailed 9 January 1852 from New York to San Francisco on the ship"Golden Gate". His brother William accompanied him and his newwife. Ruth's sister also went as did his brother George. Theywent to the southern mines near Sonora first, then later movednorth. He owned land in Butte County, Federal Land granted was2 July 1872, page 1895. BLM YUBA CO.- John Bristow 2 July 1872Township Range 170N 60E Section 008. The tombstone for Johnstates 28 September 1891, but his obituary reads 1 October 1901and has all of the other information correct and may have beenmis dated when his wife died in 1910 and the stone was carvedthen.
