a. Note:   Went to America GUSTAV CARLSON. Gustav Carlson, one of theprominent citizens of Valentine, is among the early settlers ofCherry county, where he has gained an enviable reputation as abusiness man. Mr. Carlson was horn in Engelholm, a village inthe southern part of Sweden, in 1848, the eldest in a family ofnine children. He grew to manhood in Sweden, and learned thecarpenter trade with his father, beginning at the early age oftwelve years. When twenty-one he left' his parents' home andfollowed his trade for a year and a half, as overseer of a largeforce of carpenters on a farm in Sweden. He came to America in1871, landing in New York after a voyage of seven days. Going toPennsylvania he secured employment with a railroad company,remaining in their service for two years. From there he went toHornels- Compendium of History Reminiscence & Biography ofWestern Nebraska Horizontal Bar page 559 ville, New York,where he worked at his former trade. Later he returned toPennsylvania and entered the employ of George Lepert, afurniture manufacturer, with whom he worked as employee for tenyears. Gradually rising in the work in that factory he soonbecame superintendent and had charge of all of the machinery forseven years. In 1884 our subject came to Valentine and filed ona homestead eighteen miles northeast of the town. Here he builtand lived in a sod house for a short time, during the buildingof a log house in which he lived the first years, farming whileproving up on his homestead. He has since filed on a Kincaidhomestead of four hundred and eighty acres one mile south ofValentine. In 1880 Mr. Carlson was married to Miss AmandaAnderson, a native of Sweden, who came to America with herparents when a child. Seven children have been born to Mr. andMrs. Carlson, namely, Alma, Amy, Effie, Hazel, Lloyd, Edgar andLevina. In 1891 the family moved to Valentine where Mr. Carlsonfollows his trade, doing all kinds of carpenter and cabinetwork. He has a fine shop twenty-two by one hundred and eight,and also does picture framing, plumbing, etc. He has erectednearly all of the principal buildings in Valentine, and wasappointed superintendent of construction of the Cherry countycourt house. In 1898 he started a hardware store but ran thisfor two years only, selling the business to return to his trade.In politics he is an Independent, takes an active interest inall local affairs, and is now on the town council serving hissecond term. Is a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen.
