  Eli Cleveland Yates was born in Wilkes county, North Carolina. He moved to Ashe County, North Carolina before 1850.

  Both of his grandfathers, John Yates, Sr. and Captain Robert Cleveland were Revolutionary War Soldiers.

  According to Ashe County records, Eli C. Yates was a man of wealth. It was reported by family that Eli did not trust banks and hid his money in hand knitted socks. From time to time he would bring out his money from it's hiding place, pour it into a dishpan and count it. After his death, although May tried to find it, the money is still hidden.
 Some report Eli's house as haunted by a ghost which would come down the steps and fall across the feet of the person sleeping in the bedroom below. Others tell of a white glow going from fence post to fence (post?) in Eli's yard.
