Note: It should be mentioned that in the source, Roger Donald Riddle's, "Yates Family History (cir 1996)." John Yates Jr. was listed as John Yates Sr. The source did not go back any farther, therefore I assumed that Roger Riddle did not know that there was a "John Yates Sr.", a "John Yates Jr.", and a "John Yates, III." Records indicate that John Yates, Sr. (actually John Yates Jr.) lived in Wilkes County as early as 1776. John and Jemima settled on 400 acres that John Yates Sr. owned on the North Fork of the Lewis Fork Creek in Wilkes County. Both John and Jemima drew Revolutionary War pensions. {Roger Donald Riddle, "Yates Family History (cir 1996)."} Per one source I have acquired, "Descendants of John Yates, Sr." by Beverly Jean Aytes- Bowhall, claims that John Yates, Sr. (actually my John Yates Jr.) was born in Germany and that some of his children changed their surnames around 1800 to "Aytes." And also depending on the census that is read the name of his descendants may be found as "Yates", "Ates", "Atyse", "Aites" or as "Atz" depending on the census takers lists. It is my belief that in Mrs. Bowhall's search for her descendants, she must have found enough compelling information to believe that her "Aytes" linage started here. It is also my belief at this time that this is a false connection, or at least not here with this John Yates. She is the only one at this time making this claim. Contradictory to her claim is the following sources: {Roger Donald Riddle, "Yates Family History (cir 1996)."} {Our Family History ~ Yates, Found at www.concentric.net/~hwill/Yates.html}
