Census records from 1870 for Ashe County North Carolina, Jefferson District. Records indicate that John Shatley and family moved from Wilkes County to Ashe County North Carolina sometime between 1850 and 1870. According to Aunt Virgie (Virgie Yates, id# 122, aunt of Roger Donald Riddle ), John Shatley was a shoemaker. Aunt Virgie Recalls the time that her mother told of how her grandmother Susan complained about the sounds that the new shoes made when all the kids wore them.

What I have found most interesting here is that John and Susan Shatley's Son, Riley Shatley was married and had a daughter the very same day of the very same year as when John and Susan had another daughter. Riley named his daughter Susanna Caroline Shatley, who apparently when by Susan for short. John and Susan also named their daughter Susan Shatley (would this make her Susan Shatley Jr. ?). In short, that mean that this Susan, had a mother named Susan and an aunt that also when by the name Susan who was also the very same age she was. In fact, I thought this to be some sort of error. That perhaps a 'Susan Shatley' was listed twice accidently. Especially since two of them had the exact same birthday. But, in my documented telephone conversation with Roger Riddle on December 29, 1998, he assured that as far as he knew it is not an error.
