1999 DEATH: "John Wilbur Wheat, 89, resident of Decatur since 1971, died at 8:25 a.m. Friday in Adams County Memorial Hospital.
"He was born June 16, 1909 in Eufaula, Oklahoma to Marion and Tempa (Clymer) Wheat. He married Helen Bookout on July 21, 1931 in Covington, Kentucky; she preceded him in death on November 2, 1987.
"Mr. Wheat retired in 1970 from International Harvester in Fort Wayne after 30 years of service. He also farmed in Allen and Adams counties. He formerly attended Hoagland United Methodist Church. At the time of his death, he was a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church in Decatur.
"He was also a member of the Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.
"He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Don (Ruth) Shifferly, Decatur, Mrs. Robert (Dorothy) Rioux, Fort Wayne; a son, Thomas E. Wheat, Fripp Island, South Carolina; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
"In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son and two daughters.
"Funeral services are 1 p.m. Sunday at Union Chapel United Methodist Church. Burial will take place in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Bryant. Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Sunday at the church.
