Note: d great-grandfather, was born July 4, 1919 in Lynzburg, Louisiana and died May 24, 1998 at Summit Hospital, Bossier City, Louisiana after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease.Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 27, 1998 at 10:00 A.M. at Rockett-Nettles Funeral Home Chapel in Coushatta, Louisiana with Rev. Wiley Cole and Rev. Larry Joyner officiating. Burial will be in Holley Springs Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 26, 1998 from 11:00 A.M. until 10:00 P.M.We honor this man whose life meant so much to so many. A dedicated teacher and military officer, he inspired all who knew him with his intellect, leadership and determination. He was a long-time member of Bethel Baptist Church.Lt. Col. Fletcher enlisted in the U.S. Calvary in 1938, attended West Point Preparatory School and served as an aide-de-camp to General John Wainwright. Commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the Army Air Force in 1942, he served as bombardier for B-17's with the 388th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force based in Knettishall, England. He flew more than 25 missions over Germany, France, Romania and Africa. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters for heroism.A graduate of Methvin High School and Northwestern State University with B.S. and M.S. degrees in business and education, he did additional post-graduate study at Louisiana State University and the University of Arkansas. He taught at high schools in north Louisiana, served as a principal and spent 13 years as a junior high math teacher in Port Arthur, Texas.An avid sportsman and fisherman, he spent many happy days at his camp on Black Lake in Natchitoches Parish. We will always remember hiw quiet courage, sense of humor and compassion for others.Milton was preceded in death by his parents, Thad Fletcher and Della Giddings White; brother, Alvin Fletcher; sister, Cecil Fletcher; and a special aunt, Una Fletcher.He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Hazel Norrid Fletcher of Coushatta, LA; one son, Richard N. Fletcher and partner Bryan W. Elwood of Dallas, TX; three daughters, Millicent Bridges and husband Kenneth of Monroe, LA, Kay Dalton and husband Len of Campti, LA and Carol Payzant and husband Bill of Monroe, LA; one brother, Orleans Fletcher of Flomaton, AL; one sister, Audrey Hight of Magnolia, AR and a special uncle, Olan Fletcher of Longview, TX; four grandsons, Todd Bridges and wife Tammie of West Monroe, LA, Ricky Bridges of El Paso, TX, Troy Custis and Jeffery Custis of Campti, LA; twin great-grandsons, Cody and Zachary Bridges of West Monroe, LA; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.The family would particularly like to thank Dr. Michael Aura, Dr. Kristoff Kundo and the staff at Summit Hospital in Bossier City, LA for their compassionate care. Special thanks also to Rev. Wiley Cole and the membership of Bethel Baptist Church for their compassionate and prayerful support.
