Note: FRANKS-CROW (by John Stippick, published in a history of Coryell County, Texas) …Henry Franks’ father, Peter Franks, and his grandfather, Andrew Franks, were early settlers of Northern Louisiana. The first settled in “The Military Strip,” a no-man’s land between French Louisiana and Spanish Texas. As a result of the Louisiana Purchase, they were forced by the U. S. Army to move to the Liberty Hill-Brushy Valley area of North Louisiana. …Long life is common in this family. One old story from Gatesville in the early 1900’s has Thomas Jasper Franks, with a long white beard, wandering into a grocery store on the square and asking for his “Papa.” People in the store asked the grocer if that old man were “teched,” but the grocer replied, “No. That man coming through the door IS his papa.” (The article is accompanied by a picture of Thomas Jasper Franks and his brothers all sporting long beards and badges from the Confederate Reunion. Thomas and Mary lived in Coryell County, then moved away and Thomas returned to live out the remainder of his days sometime after Mary’s death.
