Texas Baptist Home for Children celebrating centennial anniversary, by PAUL GAUNTT Daily Light staff writer Posted Jun. 9, 2010 at 12:01 AM “While the BMA of Texas was a part of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, they had supported the Buckner Home in Dallas,” Marsh said. “But the association’s desire was to build and maintain a home, like Buckner, for children. Several towns invited the newly-organized denomination to build its children’s home in their environ, but it was Waxahachie that made the most impressive invitation - that of promising $1,500 on the first building.” The first children of the Texas Baptist Orphanage lived in the home of the Rev. J.S. Evans, the first manager. On Jan. 21, 1910, the Waxahachie orphanage was granted a charter by the state of Texas. The first building was completed in 1912 and, by May 1913, the orphanage celebrated its grand opening with 19 children in care. By 1918, another addition was made to the building and, in 1946, a building for boys was erected. “The staff and children grew most of their food on farmland and kept dairy cows and chickens in those early days,” Marsh said. “Churches sent other food and supplies.” McClung was a member of the Landmark Baptists and an associate of Samuel Augustus Hayden.
